Neglected by college, Raped by media

25th April 2010  |  Post by Abid.

Well friends, I'm a student of Silicon Institute of Technology, Bhubaneswar. This blog is regarding the incidents that have troubled the students of our college over the past few days. Silicon Institute of  Tech., popularly known as Silicon, is one of the premier engineering institutes of Eastern India. In fact, Silicon was adjudged as the Best Private Engineering College* under Biju Pattnaik University Of  Technology and overall as the 2nd Best Engineering College*. This college has produced some of the best of technocrats and brilliant minds. As a matter of fact, this year's All India Gate Topper, Arindam Bhattacharya, is from our college. Siliconites have been known for their discipline, dedication, intelligence and hard work. But today, Silicon, for the first time, is reeling under a huge crisis.

All of this began with the death of Shamsuddin Shah (popularly known as Shyam), a 3rd year student of Electronics and Telecommunications, on 22nd April, 2010. Although I did not know him personally, but we had some common friends and it is from them that I came to know about him. He was a lateral entry student. He joined our college in 2008. He did his diploma from IGIT, Sarang. He was a very good student. In fact, he was the batch topper at IGIT. He was very humble, disciplined, polite and soft-spoken. When it comes to discipline, teachers used to set him as an example. He was very helpful and whenever his friends needed him he was with them. He had an expertise over his branch subjects. On 23rd April,  a condolence meeting was organised at our  college and I was really moved to see how much the students of ET liked Shyam  .....I regret not having contact with him and now it's too late to have. May his soul rest in peace. God bless him.

The controversy was regarding the manner of his death. The internal exams for the 3rd year students had started from 19th April and it was supposed to end on 23rd April. On 19th April, it is believed that the curd given during lunch in the canteen was stale. Many students fell sick the same day allegedly because of the food given during lunch. (Even I had lunch on that day but nothing happened to me). According to the hostel students, about 72 students in the hostel fell sick. Many of them complained of constipation and loose motions. Shamsuddin, also, had his lunch in the canteen that day and even he fell sick. But I suppose that wasn't too serious 'cause he continued to appear for the internal exams. On 22nd April too, Shamsuddin appeared for the exams and after the exams he had his lunch in the canteen. After sometime he felt uneasy and he returned home. He was NOT a hostelite. He went home, took his medicines and then he went to sleep. After that he did not wake up again.

The news of his death soon reached the students. Since our college hostels are within the campus, by evening, everyone in the college was aware of Shyam's death.  There was a sense of tension and grief in the campus. Then like wildfires, rumors started spreading that Shamsuddin died of food poisoning. Students were really agitated to hear this. The deteriorating quality of food in the canteen was already a issue and coupled with it the rumors about Shyam's death and the growing number of sick students in the hostel acted as fuel for fire. Grief gave its way to anger. At dinner time, the students did not enter the canteen. Instead, they gathered and decided to protest in front of the canteen at T-square. The canteen staff and the faculty-in-charge of the canteen arrived and had a talk with the angry students but that did not satisfy the students. Later on Sanjeev Nayak, Director (Administartion) and Ramananda Mishra, Director (Finance) arrived and had a discussion with the student representatives. This continued for sometime. Meanwhile, the media came to know about the incidents within the college campus and late in the night media-persons from various local TV channels arrived. However, they could not enter into the college. The college security guards prevented them from entering inside the campus. During this time, a girl from the Silicon Girl's Hostel fell seriously ill. She was taken in the college ambulance but the college main gate was closed and seeing the media persons outside the main gate, it was decided to take the ambulance from gate no. 3 but suddenly the ambulance stopped near the gate no. 3. Seeing this, the other students rushed to the ambulance. They realised that the media persons had reached gate no. 3 as well and hence the gate was locked. After several requests to open the gate was denied   by the security guards, the students decided to break the lock and finally they succeeded in doing so. But with this, the media persons also entered inside the campus. The guards asked them to not enter the college but they did not respond and entered inside the campus. Then began the unfortunate and ugly battle. Some of the Silicon staff while trying to prevent the media persons from entering the campus resorted to violence. What followed next was a bitter clash between the Silicon staff and media persons. Several media persons were hurt, cameras and microphones were damaged as well. The media called in the police and three Silicon staff were arrested. ....What a horrible night it was!! I tried to sleep but constant phone calls and messages did not let me.

If you thought the night was bad, then hold on .....the worse was yet to come. This news was everywhere ....from the front pages of almost every neswaper to the top story of every local TV channel. Wondering why  I said worse?? Cause there was total misrepresentation of facts . None of the TV channels, nor the newspapers  published the correct news. As the say in Hindi - jitne muh utni baatein. Each of the channels and newspapers had a different version of their own. And what was like adding insult to injury is, none of them said anything properly about Shamsuddin. None of the channels made an effort to at least get Shamsuddin's photograph. What was even more sad is that most of them did not even mention his name ....just said that 'a boy' from Silicon had died. They had completely deviated from the real issue and made the attack on them as an issue of EGO. In the 30 minutes news bulletin, 25 minutes was spent only on showing how the journalists were attacked .... at least they could have reported 2 minutes on Shamsuddin ...but it wasn't. Had the journalists not been attacked, I bet this news item would not have lasted even 30 seconds. They'd made a mockery of our plight. One of the local newspapers reported that Silicon staff agreed to give them information and asked them to come inside the campus and then they took them to a dark remote corner of the campus and then attacked them from behind. Another reported that goons were hired for attacking the journalists. Come on man if they publish such crap on the front pages of newspapers, then I must say they deserve to get beaten up. And about the attacks .....the media persons were no angels. Yes, I agree they were attacked but they counter attacked as well. Agreed that Silicon staff abused them but even they abused the staff in return. Well, I hope they know that two wrongs do not make a right. And on what moral grounds are they reporting such bullshit if they themselves resort to such things. Well I must admit when I first saw the news on TV in the morning, only 3 words came out of my mouth - WHAT THE F**K!!! ( Forgive me for the language being used, but any other word could not have justified my reaction). We're the students. We were there the whole night. We know the real story. How can the media say such nonsense stuff. Here's another instance. A journalist named Balram (I don't remember his surname) in an interview said that last night the ambulance carried the dead body but as I have said earlier it was a girl who was severely ill was being taken to the hospital. Even worse were several other newspapers who claimed Shamsuddin was a hostelite and he died in the hostel. Another paper claimed he was taken to KIMS hospital where he had blood vomiting before his death. I just can't believe how can journalists be so irresponsible. ( I dont know the procedure to sue. If I did know it, I bet I would have earned so much money as compensation from so many of these news channels and newspapers that  next year I could have bought Mumbai Indians from Mukesh Ambani. Any lawyer reading this blog, please mail me the procedures to sue). Almost all the media houses have reported he has died of food poisoning. How can they be so sure when we the students ...even the closest of his friends or even his roommate isn't so sure of. Do they have the post-mortem report?? Atleast they could have used the word "allegedly" or "supposedly" but no  ....no one in the college is sure about his death but the media is!! Long live media!! Maybe they can smell things and know about it. Certain sections of the media have also reported that Siliconites have ransacked the college building and other public properties. The fact is we have never resolved to violence even at times of despair and the case of ransacking our institute is absolutely false this time too. The media has literally assassinated the character of our college ....raped our souls ....made a mockery of our plight as if the death of one of our friends wasn't enough.

The news that I'm getting at the moment is that the media is planning to continue their agitation. They're reportedly trying to cancel the affiliation of our college. How can the media put the future of  2500 students at stake just for the acts of 4-5 people ....and I thought media was sensible, responsible ....all bullshit!!

The future of Siliconites is uncertain ....our college and hostels have been shut down sine die. I just don't know what's in store for us next. But I know one thing that Siliconites are the best in Orissa ....Siliconites  are strong ....Siliconites will bounce back once again and we'll reach the sky for sure!!!
As far as the media is concerned, I would request them to let us live alone. Do not interfere in the college's internal matters. And please stop the malicious and ill-motivated hate propaganda carried on against Silicon.
There is some good news as of now. The Orissa Private Engineering Colleges Association (OPECA) has come out in support of Silicon. So there is still hope. There's definitely light at the end of the tunnel.

Well, at least, Shamsuddin would have never liked to have such a thing going on after his demise. Let's pray that Shamsuddin's soul rest in peace. May God give strength to his family at this moment of crisis. Shamsuddin has united all of the Siliconites. Let's carry this unity forward and fight against all odds existing within the college as well as the odds posed the media.

I would request all Siliconites, all the engineering students and the general public to pass on this message to everyone and fight for the cause of the students of Silicon.

Lastly I would like to say, on behalf of all Siliconites,

Give us some sunshine,
Give us some rain,
Give us another chance,
We wanna grow up once again.

The media should concentrate on their work. They are just making small things exaggerated and its nothing but for publicity only and to flash some NEWS. Friends, please check all the newspapers , you will find different different 'cock and bull' stories regarding this issue.
This shows how the so called 4th pillar of Democracy holds it...

Hang on. Please leave Silicon and let it do its BEST as always....

It was the fear of loosing the college's name and fame wich dey gathered in 10years of tym(its nt a small tym).
It was the unbearable and intolerable comments by the media persons which provoked dem to take such action coz media was portraying all wrong and false allegations...so dey took such step...

so now...at dis point of tym,V all shud stand by our College "OUR SILICON"...

The media is to be blamed completely but at the same time silicon management isn't pure either. The media has highlighted more on it's attack but why should there be an attack at the first place. Nobody is sure whether my dear junior died of food poisoning but are you all sure the canteen food is to your liking. pick up any one from the college and ask, "Do u like our canteen food ?" If he/she says 'yes, absolutely, the quality is perfectly compatible with the price'. Then i feel we are under serious accusations. Finally regarding cancellation of our affiliation, don't worry, it will not happen. "Humne yahaan haath mein chudiyaan nahin pehen rakhi hain". Still i love my silicon and i love my siliconites. We are the number 1 and we'll continue to be the number 1

It's unfortunate that media skips achievements of students such as Arindham . I don't know when was the last time when an Eng. college from Orissa produced a Gate Topper .
But they tend to add fuel to fire to such incidents . Media is engaging in TRP shooting activities. What happened that day was unfortunate not unruly.

Hey.. Its time to unite... Its time to fight... One thing we can do,we can call some reliable media persons and give the a interview and describe the real incident. "Zeher hi Zeher ko kat ta hey." They have made the death of the poor guy a story/script for money making. Even it could be a plan against silicon.

Journalists create a scene everywhere..They mix up lot of things to the real news, just for TRPs. Cause its their business, they want sensational news, the more thrilling it be, the more readership they gain..You must have remembered what Dharitri did to our school, DAV Cspur in the past (a completely fake story, about a girl's death), but see, DAV again rose..Whatever they do, you can never bury truth, atleast never in this age of social networks..

Dear Mr Abid

Namaskar and thank you so much for presenting the versions and views of the SIT students in regard to the developments following Shyam's death and leading to the unsavoury incidents of 22 April 2010, something that most local media have unfortunately failed to report.

I as a responsible citizen, parent and jourmalist wish to assure you that many amongst us do not, as a matter of principle, support factual misrepresentation. We are for the truth and fairplay.

Please do not think the media is insensitive or impervious to the larger interests of just any part or section of our society.

Many of us are strongly in favour of an independent and impartial judicial probe into the incidents that took place on 22 April 2010
and the subsequent developments- a probe that closely examines the roles of the SIT authorities, the local police, media persons as well as other forces and brings the truth out for the people at large.

I assure you my young friend that we will not allow false reporting, hypes and exaggerations to show you or your Institute in bad light. And at the same time we will also not tolerate injustice, neglect or dadagiri in any form on the part of the authorities who think they can get away with crimes against our best young talents because they have money-power and clout.

A proper judicial probe, I hope, will satisfy angry young men like you and journalists who happen to operate within the limits of ethical media practice.

Guys!...n ofcourse gals...somebody has died...if not the colg, let the students be courteous enough 2 contribute "anything" to his family.losing a young chap is the hell of an experience 4 parents.as a third human,i can perceive the "rising" of RBD personified.silicon,as i know, never had strikes/fights...its considered as a very decent colg...focussd in studies.first time,SIT is in news...and in a BIG news.withdrawing affiliation and thus ruining lives of so many students is not justified here.personally,i dont think that's goinna be accepted.u guys are united and that's your greatest strength coz u all are sandwiched between media and colg admin...that's not good!

god bless shamsuddin's family with lots of strength and vigor 2 overcome the loss.

@Sampad Mahapatra :

If I'm not wrong you are from NDTV, sir.

There are certain things which I would like to stress upon. At this moment of time, it would be quite inappropriate on my part to comment anything on the clash between college authorities and media since the matter is subjudicial.

However, I would like to speak about the plight of the students. The past few days have been quite disturbing for the Siliconites especially since reports came in that certain sections of the media are demanding the withdrawl of affiliation from the college. Our semester exams are quite close as well (starting from May 12). According to some reports, it is also uncertain whether Silicon will be a test center for the semester exams. There is total confusion as to what the future has in store for us.

These things have been quite agonising for the students of Silicon.

I have full conviction that you, Sampad sir, are a part of the responsible and sensible section of the media unlike some of the people from the local media. I would, therefore, humbly request you to talk about the plight of the students within the journalists community and ask them not to take any step that could put the careers of thousands of students under threat.

Thank you,
Abid

MAY THE DEPARTED SOUL REST IN PEACE.

Investigation should be done to find the cause of demise of the student.

As far as the comments of media and so called BPUT students' union is concerned (which is not an authorized body of BPUT, whose office bearers are permanent for lifetime and in their website they have ranked Silicon as the 2nd best college in Orissa), I would say "Jab Log tumhare khilap kuch bolne lage, toh samjho tarakki kar rahe ho". I agree that in a democracy everyone has the right to speak, but please don't speak crap.

Although I don't promote violence, but if someone tries to forcibly enter my home and defame my family members; I would have done the same thing as the college staff did. Still I believe this matter could have been handled in a better way.

I agree with media regarding the "cancelling the affiliation of the college" because:
1. No student has the right to do well in studies during engineering days.
2. No parents should expect their children to secure good marks in CAT and XAT exams.
3. The govt. of orissa should not feel proud of such a college which has brought fame to the state.
4. Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam said,"I have found the best students at the last bench of a class (every human being has some special qualities)", so Silicon has no right to be at the forefront.

Huh..Cancelling the affiliation..Sorry to use the word...But "WHAT THE F**K".

Please stop making ego clashes.

I hope GOD gives enough strength and courage to the family members of Shyam to overcome this tragic period.

i am an ex-student of silicon. may be u r right but.... the staffs those are inside lockup are simply bastards....

they need this type of treatment... its not my view i think most of the siliconites think the same...

the silicon managemnt is very harsh on students...

1. Need better intellectual lecturers
2. Student should get better treatment from management...as they are students....not QAIDI

everyone know media has power. This time media is utilising their power in bad way. They are utilising their power to take revenge of bad event of 23April.This will not only spoil day by growing good image of silicon but also harm the carrier of thousand students. So i request all siliconite to unite and media person to not spoil the carrier of thousand student to just increase the TRP.

Now is the time we Siliconites should get united. I trust the management and all Siliconites. I have full faith in our judicial system and am sure everything will be fine soon.
As Silicon, is one of the best engineering institutes in Orissa, it has to face hurdles with time. Everything comes with a cost , we Siliconites should take initiative to overcome this issue.

May Shamsuddin Shah soul rest in peace.

y dont u all gather up and call a meeting regarding this.Like wat can be done,

1. like some students may be 4 of u can go and present the whole matter in front of some political luminaries(preferably CM and I am dead sure he will lend u ears)

2.U all can file a case of defamation. But dat will demand a lot of grit from ur side. And it will require some money also. Yah money can be collected among urselves and may be ur seniors who r employed can also help regarding this.

3.May be if u all are lucky den may be some authentic media group can hear and make others hear the reality through u all.

4. But yes if u really want ur college to restore pride u need a bit of determination and grit and courage. I wud say go for it and let the truth prevail.

5. In the process may sure u r not susceptible to violence.

Hi Abid,

I belong to the first batch of Silicon.Firstly I would like to Thank You for the exceptional blog . This has helped gain support of a large community of siliconites who are outside silicon.
As you are still in college I would like you to address students(juniors) on the consequences of addressing media.Had students not given interview regarding food poisoning on TV the matter wouldn't have worsened. Its strange to see students destroying their own career in front of the camera. I do believe the college should take action against students for speaking without getting their facts right.
Please keep us posted on further happenings

I have gone through the post and all the comments.I have talked to a few siliconites and more over I know silicon from 2 years and I adore its discipline and environment.
Regarding the case,I feel its become more a clash between media and college rather than bringing up the truths. Some how, I feel it become an ego clash and students became scape goats.

1) Whats the reason between Shyamsuddin death?
2) On that day, how media got the news to arrive at Silicon gate?(I feel, its an important question because media's motive in positive sense is always to safe-guard truth and people. They came there to report not to fight with authorities, later unfortunate things happened.)
3) In democracy, there is no place for violence, then who are involved in violence on that day?
4) Is the conditions existing in canteen are really bad? Conditions can take life away.Is it true? ( How the mass population has fallen ill after taking a meal? Earlier also every one knows that Silicon management acted as monarchs regarding canteen issue when the mess bill was increased).
5) Who is the irresponsible staff in the management? Every one knows Silicon is best because of its man power and only who are irresponsible should be ousted keeping in mind that students should be cared.
6) No matter who they are whether media or officials of silicon who involved in violence should be punished and truth, law should win. I heard that OPECA has backed Silicon management saying Students might have involved making management safe but why to hide the facts.
I m sure that no one can cancel affiliation as there will be lot of investigation before doing that.
Silicon should be saved and students life should be saved but criminals who opted violence should be punished and its clear that media came to report .later fight happened but why Silicon officials didn't allow them to report? There are some flaws.Isn't it?

Independent probe should be allowed to investigate and at the same time interim measures should be taken by allowing the management to carry on the issues in the interest of students but an official head from BPUT should monitor college till investigation reports come and persons accused should be kept away from all the issues till then.

Once investigation completed, everything can be sorted out but this academic year should be run smooth.

nicely written... it appears u r not a student but another journalist :).... nice to know we have responsible students who still think by writing blogs anything will change here

carryonmanas on May 14, 2010 at 5:31 PM said...

its not easy to cancel affiliation of an institute without proper investigation.

And if u are really truthful the don't worry, every thing will fine. let the matter go to ministry level, let the proper investigation complete.

hats off for the depth feeling for your community. it is the student life where we can take our first step to change the society and its view.

Remember:- "Together we can and we will do it"
